The French Air Force is to receive 200 Meteor high-speed (ramjet), long-range air-to-air missiles.

A European consortium comprising of Britain, Germany, Italy, Spain, France and Sweden is developing the Meteor, which is a long range, radar guided missile.

The ramjet technology is being used for the first time in such a missile, enabling it to fly at extremely high speeds.

The Meteor offers considerable speed advantage, with a 50% greater range than the top-of-the-line air-to-air missile.

The missiles are expected to arrive in France after seven years, as they are still under development.

The Meteor missile passed a flight test five years ago, reports StrategyWorld.com.
