The US Air Force has awarded a $35m contract to Environmental Tectonics Corporation (ETC) to provide an Authentic Tactical Flight Simulator-400 (ATFS-400).

The ATFS-400 merges ETC’s virtual battle space, motion-based technologies, G-Pointing, and other ETC technology to provide a genuine flight experience in a ground-based simulator, enabling pilots to improve their tactical skills at 1/28 of the cost of flying the aircraft.

The ATFS-400 can be flown in the same manner as a tactical aircraft and incorporates a high-fidelity aircraft cockpit that integrates a virtual tactical environment into a high-performance one, forming a completely flyable human centrifuge.

The ATFS-400 is the tenth high-performance human centrifuge developed by ETC, and the third ATFS-400 device in the world.

The tactical flight simulator will be manufactured at ETC’s primary manufacturing facility in Southampton, Pennsylvania.

Delivery of the device to the 711th Human Performance Wing at Dayton, Ohio-based Wright Patterson Air Force Base is scheduled for August 2012.
