The South African Air Force (SAAF) will receive 11 Rooivalk combat helicopters from Denel by the end of March 2011.

Denel will deliver five baseline Rooivalk helicopters to SAAF’s 16 Squadron in Bloemfontein. The remaining six aircraft will be completed and delivered soon after.

The company was awarded a contract to improve the Rooivalk’s safety and reliability while upgrading the accuracy of its weapons systems.

Denel will also support the SAAF with the training of flight and ground crews to operate and maintain Rooivalk, according to news24.com.

The SAAF will perform an accelerated flying programme of 200 hours with the Rooivalk helicopters from mid-October 2010 at its test facility at AFB Overberg following the delivery.
