Rockwell Collins has handed over its new 721S fixed site ground very/ultra high frequency (V/UHF) radio systems to the US Air Force (USAF) in the Republic of Korea.
The delivery of multiple next generation radio systems, along with ancillary equipment and training follows a contract awarded by the USAF’s 621st Air Control Squadron, to provide advanced networked ground communications to the deployed personnel in the region.
Supplied along with installation support, the radios are currently fielded at multiple sites throughout South Korea, as part of an integrated communications upgrade recently initiated by the air force.
A drop-in, software-defined radio replacement for the legacy Rockwell Collins AN/GRC-171 communications system, the 721S radio provides reliable and long-range communications that can be optimised for complex operational conditions.
Weighing 60% less than its predecessor, the high-power VHF-UHF radio transceiver needs only five minutes for installation, and is claimed to provide AM and FM frequency coverage in any specific band up to the entire 30MHz – 512MHz range.
Fully interoperable with coalition forces’ legacy radios, the 721S radio comes equipped with a new remote control feature that enables users to upgrade their installations for ‘lights out’ operation, thereby lowering manpower requirements.

By GlobalDataAdditionally, the radio features Rockwell Collins’ patented Clarity technology, which is designed to eliminate background noise in both transmit and receive modes and provide four times the communications coverage compared to traditional radios.
Assigned to the 607th Air Operations Center, 7th Air Force, Osan Air Base, South Korea, the 621st Air Control Squadron is responsible for provision of air control services for USAF’s combat air operations.
