Boeing has awarded a contract to Raytheon to start second low-rate initial production (LRIP2) of APG-82(V)1 active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar systems, as part of the US Air Force’s (USAF) F-15E Radar Modernization Program (RMP).

The undisclosed contract forms part of an LRIP 2 order received by Boeing in July 2012, to produce and deliver ten AESA radars to the USAF.

Mark Kula, vice president of Tactical Airborne Systems for Raytheon’s Space and Airborne Systems business, said the APG-82 radars will enable the F-15E pilots to fly the aircraft with increased confidence.

"Raytheon leads the world in AESA radar production, with more than 400 systems delivered and 300,000 operational flight hours achieved on multiple platforms," Kulla added.

Representing the latest modification for the F-15E Strike Eagle fleet, the RMP is currently undergoing a 14-month, 110-sortie flight test programme at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, and Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico, US.

Boeing and Raytheon are conducting data reduction analysis throughout the test phase to evaluate the compatibility of the system’s performance with rigorous specifications.

The RMP APG-82(V) 1 is an advanced AESA radar, designed for integration into the weapons system of the F-15E fighter, to help improve its detection and enemy tracking capability.

Developed to replace the aircraft’s existing APG-70 mechanically scanned array radar, the APG-82(V) 1 is expected to offer improved radar reliability, maintainability and performance, while significantly lowering support costs.

The LRIP-2 radar systems are scheduled for delivery in February 2014, briging the total deliveries of APG-82(V)1 radars to six.
