Defense Microelectronics Activity (DMEA) has awarded a contract to Northrop Grumman for the supply of a combat electromagnetic environment simulator (CEESIM) system to the US Air Force (USAF).
The contract covers maintenance support for the USAF’s E-3 airborne warning and control system (AWACS) electronic support measures operational computer programme software.
The simulator features direct-injection (RF, digital, IF, video) and free-space radiation configurations, 3D, a drag and drop graphical user interface (GUI), a control computer with Linux operating system, a user-defined platform and emitter and scenario element libraries.
The incorporation of the high fidelity intrapulse modulation (HFIM) capability enables the simulator to provide navigation and pulse data generated from customised scenarios and allows the ASIF software engineers to replicate a realistic environment.
The system enables continuous reuse of avionics integration support facility (AISF) threat data and test scenarios by automatic conversion of legacy advanced multiple environment simulator (AMES) system emitter files to CEESIM emitter files.

By GlobalDataNorthrop Amherst Systems business unit president Joe Downie said that the system’s flexibility allows adaptation to a range of both system-under-test and existing laboratory external control interfaces.
"This flexibility provides a cost-effective transition from the existing simulator to a state-of-the-art, supportable, modern simulator capability, in support of fifth-generation electronic warfare systems," Downie added.
The new capability will replace the 14-year-old AMES system, which is currently in service at Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma City, US.
DMEA is the applied engineering facility of the US Department of Defense that works with defence prime contractors and the commercial semiconductor industry to provide upgraded microelectronics components for military systems.
