Russian and Nato fighter aircraft will take part in their first joint anti-terrorism drill, Vigilant Skies 2011, scheduled to begin from 6 June, according to Russian National Antiterrorism Committee spokesman Nikolai Sintsov.
The counter-terrorism exercise will be held as a part of the Nato-Russia Council Cooperative Airspace Initiative.
“This initiative is designed to prevent terrorist attacks…by sharing information on movements in Nato airspace and Russian airspace,” Nato added.
The exercise aims to help improve air safety for passengers on international flights between Nato and Russian airspace.
The drill will also increase Russia-Nato counter-terrorism capabilities as well as strengthen cooperation and understanding between the participating countries, according to RIA Novosti.
