The Indian Air Force (IAF) has lost 61 aircraft and helicopter due to accidents, killing 28 pilots, from 2006 to 2010.
Defence Minister AK Antony provided this information in a written reply to the Indian Parliament.
The minister said the air force had aircraft of varying ages on its inventory that were thoroughly checked and properly maintained by a qualified team of engineers and technicians.
“No aircraft is offered for flight unless it has passed all checks and is fully fit for flying,” he said.
