Royal Air Force will receive additional 22 new Chinook helicopters, as part of a new future helicopter strategy that will increase the number of lift helicopters by 40%, for operations in Afghanistan.
The RAF will fly the new multimission, heavy-lift transport Chinook helicopters, alongside the Merlins that arrived in Afghanistan last month.
The primary responsibility of Chinook helicopter’s is to move troops, artillery, ammunition, fuel, water, barrier materials, supplies and equipment on the battlefield.
Medical evacuation, disaster relief, search and rescue, aircraft recovery, fire fighting, parachute drops, heavy construction and civil development are part of Chinook’s secondary missions.
The delivery of the first ten new Chinooks will began in 2012 and will complete in 2013.
Part of a £6bn programme by the UK MoD, the Chinook fleet in total will increase in size from 48 to 70 airframes, which will include eight mk3 Chinooks, and replace two Chinooks lost on operations.
