Thales Brazilian subsidiary Omnisys has received a contract to supply primary and secondary airspace surveillance radar stations for deployment in the country’s mid-west border area.
The contract was awarded by the Commission for the Implementation of the Airspace Control System (CISCEA) and requires Omnisys to install LP23SST-NG and RMS970S route surveillance radars in the cities of Ponta Porã, Corumbá and Porto Murtinho.
To be manufactured locally in Brazil at Omnisys’ facilities in São Bernardo do Campo, the new radars are expected to increase airspace radar coverage in the region and control the influx of illegal goods.
The radars will also enable the Brazilian Air Force to monitor drug trafficking and other forms of smuggling in the mid-west border area.
Deployment of the radars will help the service detect low-altitude aircraft flying illegally over the region.
The radars are equipped with electronic protection measures and altimetry functionality. In addition, they offer improved accuracy and target resolution performance.

By GlobalDataThales Latin America vice-president Ruben Lazo said: “Participating in the strengthening of the Brazilian defence industry and consolidating the entirely local production of the equipment is a great satisfaction for Thales Brazilian subsidiary, Omnisys.
“It strengthens Thales’ commitment to the country and to Latin America in the mission of making the region safer. Indeed, Thales’s decisive technologies in use in these radars will help the Brazilian Air Force to take the best decision in decisive moments.”
The LP23SST-NG is a long-range primary radar that can detect all types of cooperative and non-cooperative aircraft.
While the built-in altimetry function enables accurate three-dimensional identification of targets, the electronic countermeasures are capable of safeguarding the radars from electromagnetic interference.
The RMS970S secondary radar contributes to air traffic safety by ensuring total integrity and availability of surveillance and communication data.
Omnisys will also provide technical support, including preventive and corrective maintenance, field technical support and maintenance and operator training.
