Rogue 1 is a next-generation, rapidly deployable, optionally lethal vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) small unmanned aerial system (sUAS) developed by Teledyne FLIR Defense, a mission-critical technology and systems provider and a division of Teledyne Technologies.
Teledyne FLIR Defense unveiled the Rogue 1 loitering munition system at the Special Operations Forces Week convention in Tampa, Florida, US, in May 2024.
The Rogue 1 VTOL system is the latest addition to the company’s global UAS portfolio, which includes the Black Hornet nano drone, the SkyRaider and SkyRanger quadcopters, as well as the advanced StormCaster sensor and targeting systems.
Rogue 1 loitering munition system design and features
The lightweight Rogue 1 loitering munition system is designed to withstand battlefield conditions.
The single-operator drone offers a 30-minute flight time (endurance), speeds exceeding 70mph, and a range of more than six miles, even in communication and GPS-denied environments.
Rogue 1’s fuzing system features an innovative mechanical interrupt, enabling the safe recovery and reuse of the drone in scenarios where targets are disengaged or missions aborted.
The drone integrates advanced electro-optical technology, including FLIR Boson 640+ thermal cameras, ensuring exceptional reconnaissance and surveillance capabilities day and night over long distances.
The system also features a novel coupling between sensors and warheads within the gimballed payload, facilitating accurate targeting.
Payloads
Operators can attach mission-specific payloads, which are modular in nature and tailored with lethal effects intended for specific target categories.
Users have the flexibility to choose from explosively formed penetrator, forward fragmenting, or nonlethal trainer payloads.
Rogue 1 mission capabilities
Rouge 1 operates beyond the reach and abilities of conventional organic weapon systems, with a focus on minimising collateral damage and maximising standoff capabilities.
With its capacity for recovery and reuse in evolving conditions, the Rogue 1 platform offers military forces increased economy and flexibility.
The drone has proven its efficacy in trials against mobile and fixed armour, vehicles, and infantry targets.
It equips warfighters with the capability to conduct precision strikes against both moving and stationary armoured targets, soft-skinned vehicles, and dismounted threats.
Rogue 1 loitering munition system orders
The US Marine Corps awarded Teledyne FLIR Defense a $249m indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract for the Organic Precision Fires-Light (OPF-L) programme in April 2024.
The initial delivery order is valued at $12m.
OPF-L is the US Marine Corps’ new system designed to equip rifle squads and platoons with a man-packable, organic, loitering precision strike capability, enabling them to engage adversaries beyond the line of sight.
Teledyne FLIR will supply the Rogue 1 as its OPF-L platform with an initial order of 127 systems for test and evaluation purpose.
The contract covers a performance period of five years, with a three-year option included.
The capability to recover and reuse the new system will reduce the burden for Marines and boost their effectiveness in combat.
In 2022, Teledyne FLIR delivered the initial Rogue 1 loitering munitions to the US Special Operations Command as part of their evaluation for the Ground Organic Precision Strike Systems programme.
