JASSM

Exelis has received a follow-on contract to supply additional composite missile bodies and structures for the AGM-158 joint air-to-surface standoff missile (JASSM).

Awarded by Lockheed Martin, the $20m contract modification requires the company to manufacture and supply complex composite structures for Lots 11 and 12 of the JASSM.

The two production lots cover more than 400 baseline and extended-range versions of the missile.

Exelis Aerostructures vice-president and general manager Mike Blair said: "We believe this contract is a reflection of our customer’s confidence in Exelis as a trusted and capable supplier

"Our shared commitment to operational excellence began more than a decade ago, and we are prepared to deliver on this contract with the same product integrity our customer expects."

Manufactured by Lockheed, the JASSM is a 2,000lb autonomous, long-range, air-to-ground, precision standoff missile, designed to destroy high-value, well-defended, fixed and re-locatable targets in the battlefield.

"The two production lots cover more than 400 baseline and extended-range versions of the missile."

Capable of cruising autonomously day or night in all weather conditions, the stealthy missile is equipped with an infrared seeker and a GPS receiver to aim specific targets, a dual-mode penetrator and blast fragmentation warhead.

A long-range version of the baseline JASSM, the JASSM-extended range (ER) features a new engine and greater fuel load capability, and can function in heavily degraded GPS environments.

The stealthy JASSM is integrated on USAF’s B-1B, B-2, B-52, F-16 and F-15E, and onboard the Royal Australian Air Force’s (RAAF) F/A-18A/B Super Hornet fighter, while the JASSM-ER variant is mounted on the US’s B-1B bomber.

In July 2013, Exelis secured a $10m contract for Lot 10 production of composite missile bodies and structures for both versions of missile.

The company did not disclose the contract’s delivery schedule.
