The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified Congress of a possible foreign military sale of 3,200 general purpose (GP) and Penetrator Warhead bomb bodies to Bahrain.

Requested by the Government of Bahrain, the proposed deal includes 1,500 MK-82 (500lb), 600 MK-83 (1,000lb), and 600 MK-84 (2,000lb) GP bomb bodies, as well as 500 BLU-109 (2,000lb) Penetrator Warhead bomb bodies.

Under the estimated $45m deal, Bahrain has also requested for the delivery of spares and repair parts, support equipment, personnel training and equipment, as well as shipping and logistics services.

“The airforce intends to use the munitions as a deterrent to regional threats in order to bolster its homeland defence and carry out counter-terrorism operations.”

Approved by the US State Department, the sale includes technical support services for the US Government and contractor, in addition to other related elements of logistical and programme support.

The munitions will help improve the Royal Bahraini Air Force’s ability to perform and sustain air operations with its F-16 Fighting Falcon combat jet.

The airforce intends to use the munitions as a deterrent to regional threats in order to bolster its homeland defence and carry out counter-terrorism operations.

In addition, the GP bomb bodies are expected to enable Bahrain to better operate with US-led and US-supported coalition missions.

The munitions will be delivered by the US Government out of stock.
