General Dynamics (GD) Ordnance and Tactical Systems has been awarded a contract for 30mm PGU-13 ammunition by the US Army Contracting Command for the US Air Force (USAF) inventory.
Under the $32.5m contract, the company will produce new PGU-13 D/B cartridges and will also remanufacture existing PGU-13 high-explosive incendiary (HEI) cartridges.
The PGU-13 HEI ammunition is used by the USAF’s A-10 Thunderbolt attack aircraft in air-to-ground and close-air support missions, especially in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The ammunition, when fired from the A-10’s 30mm GAU-8 Avenger cannon, provides inflammatory effects against a range of targets.
Work will be carried out at the company’s facility in Marion, Illinois, US, and is estimated to be completed by July 2012.
The 30mm × 173 PGU ammunition family consists of the PGU-14/B API and PGU-15/B TP that provide armour penetration and training capability to USAF.
