The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) has received an additional two F/A-18F Super Hornet aircraft, bringing the current Australian fleet to 20.
Minister for Defence Materiel Jason Clare said the Super Hornet was one of the best fighter planes in the world.
“It has an advanced multimode AESA [actively electronically scanned array] radar and ‘low observability’ characteristics that make it significantly better than any fourth generation fighter,” he added.
Built by Boeing, the Super Hornet aircraft is a twin-engine carrier-based multirole fighter aircraft and can carry about a third more fuel and weapons payload.
The aircraft will enhance the RAAF capabilities to conduct air-to-air combat and reconnaissance as well as strike targets on land and at sea.
The RAAF is expected to receive an additional four aircraft by the end of the year.
