The Eurofighter consortium has awarded a contract to Babcock to deliver decoy-dispenser units for the Eurofighter Typhoon multirole combat aircraft.
The contract calls for Babcock to deliver parts, and assemble and test over 200 decoy dispenser units during 2012 and 2013.
The Typhoon’s two dispenser and radio frequency decoys (DRFDs), which are part of the defensive aids subsystem (DASS) comprising a laser warner, flare dispenser, chaff dispenser, missile warners, wing tip ESM/ECM pods, and towed decoy system, defend the aircraft against both air-to-air and surface-to-air missile attack.
The units to be delivered under the contract are based on a design first developed for the Tornado fighter aircraft, while the concept and technology was later incorporated into the Eurofighter Typhoon.
The latest Tranche 3A contract follows deliveries of nearly 250 and 470 decoy dispenser units in earlier two tranches.
