The Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC) has found major deficiencies in two wings at the Kirtland Air Force Base during a nuclear surety inspection (NSI).
AFMC and the Defence Threat Reduction Agency has observed deficiencies in security, the personnel reliability programme and maintenance activities of the 377th Air Base Wing and 498th Nuclear Systems Wing.
The inspection of 13 major graded areas included management and administration, technical operations, security, logistics movement, safety, storage, facilities and supply support.
AFMC will track progress and re-inspect both units following the established guidelines of the Department of Defense and Air Force by late February 2010.
The NSI is conducted every 18 months to evaluate a unit’s ability to manage nuclear resources that comply with all nuclear standards.
