The US Air Force has awarded a contract to Pratt & Whitney for the maintenance of F100 engines that power the air force’s F-15 and F-16 fighter aircraft.

Under the $74m contract awarded at Farnborough Air Show in the UK, the company will provide F100 core module overhaul maintenance for F100-PW-229 engines operated by the USAF.

Pratt & Whitney manufactures military engines such as F135 for the F-35 Lightning II, F119 for F-22 Raptor aircraft, F100 for F-15 and F-16 and F117 for C-17 Globemaster III.

The company also manufactures J52 engines for EA-6B Prowler, TF33 powering AWACS, joint STARS, B-52 and KC-135 aircraft, and the TF30 for F-111s.

Pratt & Whitney will carry out the overhaul work at its San Antonio, Texas, facility.
