Saab has selected AEL Sistemas as avionics supplier for the JAS 39 Gripen multirole combat aircraft, if the latter is selected for the Brazilian Air Force’s (FAB) FX-2 programme.
The selection forms part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two companies in 2009, to identify potential areas of co-operation, including development, production and long-term logistics supply for the Gripen fighter under the FX-2 programme.
AEL will supply an extensive avionics package, featuring displays, processors, computers, software, as well as integration and logistics support services, setting up a long-term partnership between the two companies.
The partnership will enable the transfer of technology in the future as well as full involvement in the development of aircraft technology within Brazil.
Saab Gripen Export head Eddy de la Motte said the selection represents the company’s commitment to the Brazilian Defence Policy.
”Saab has offered extensive co-operation with the Brazilian industry generating work openings, technology transfers and an opportunity to join in on a joint development programme to Brazil within the defence industry as well as a number of other businesses package,” Motte added.

By GlobalDataAEL Sistemas director general Shlomo Erez said the companies’ cooperation in Gripen aircraft will help Brazil in shifting its defence technology capability from being dependent to independent.
”By taking part in the development process of Gripen NG, AEL Sistemas S.A. will be able to introduce its latest displays, computer and software technologies into a next generation fighter,” Erez added.
Gripen is competing against Boeing F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet and Dassault Aviation’s Rafale fighter aircraft for the long-delayed F-X2 programme, which seeks procurement of 36 fourth-generation aircraft to help enhance the FAB’s aircraft capacity.
Powered by a single Volvo-Flygmotor RM12 engine, the JAS 39 Gripen is a lightweight, multirole fighter aircraft designed to conduct a wide range of air-to-air, air-to-surface and reconnaissance missions.
