Alion Science and Technology has secured a contract from the US Air Force Spectrum Management Office (AFSMO) to provide enhanced spectrum management in support of national security priorities.
Valued at $15m, the five-year Defense Systems Technical Area Task Multiple Award Contract (DS TAT MAC) will see Alion support the USAF’s spectrum management by providing strategic planning and policy recommendations, satellite coordination, and facilitating spectrum reallocation.
In addition, Alion will determine the viability of sharing spectrum with commercial wireless providers through a research and technical analysis.
The company will identify new spectrum for relocation and implement transition plans for affected spectrum-dependent systems.
The contract is expected to enable AFSMO to continue participation in national and international regulatory forums.
Alion Technology Solutions Group senior vice-president and manager Chris Amos said: "Access to wireless frequencies is essential for national security as well as for commercial uses. Our extensive experience and expertise in broadband communication will provide the Air Force with a comprehensive approach to securing spectrum for critical operations and training.

By GlobalData"Alion will support AFSMO’s mission while enabling the commercial use of additional bandwidth, ensuring that all authorised users have the access they need while preventing interference."
Previously, Alion received a contract from the US AFSMO to analyse the effects of designed and proposed spectrum relocation changes on the USAFweapons programmes.
The $5.4m contract required the company to perform spectrum supervision and analysis, RF spectrum modelling and growth of RF studies.
The work also included spectrum assessments to establish spectrum location practicability and impact of spectrum repurposing on weapons platforms and systems.
