Saab has been awarded a contract for support and maintenance of the Swedish Armed Forces’ JAS 39 Gripen multi-role combat aircraft fleet through 2014.

Awarded by the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), the SEK174m ($26.6m) contract comprises support and maintenance operations, including delivery of technical documents and ground equipment to ensure the aircraft’s continued operation in Sweden, Czech Republic, Hungary and Thailand.

The contract is an option under the framework of a previously signed contract with FMV in June 2012 for performance-based support and maintenance of Gripen, and brings the total value of options exercised to date to SEK795m ($121.3m)

Commenting on the contract, Saab Support and Services business area head Lars-Erik Wige said, "This order is fundamental for efficient and accessible operations with the Gripen system in the current year."

The 2012 contract includes options for additional orders up to a maximum value of SEK1.36bn ($207m) until December 2016.

Work under the contract is scheduled to take place at the company’s facilities in Linköping, Arboga, Järfälla, Gothenburg and Östersund, Sweden.

Powered by a single Volvo-Flygmotor RM12 engine, the JAS 39 Gripen is a lightweight, multirole fighter aircraft designed to conduct a wide range of air-to-air, air-to-surface and reconnaissance missions.

The aircraft first entered into operational service with the Swedish Air Force in 1997, which currently operates a fleet of 180 Gripens for reconnaissance operations.
