The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified Congress of a potential foreign military sale (FMS) of AT-6C Texan II aircraft and associated equipment to Iraq.
Under the estimated $790m sale, Iraq has requested the supply of a total of 24 AT-6C Texan II light attack aircraft, along with two spare PT-6A-68 turboprop engines, two spare ALE-47 counter-measure dispensing systems (CMDS) and/or two spare AAR-47 missile launch detection systems.
The package also includes non-selective availability anti-spoofing module (SAASM) global positioning systems (GPS) with CMA-4124, spare and repair parts, maintenance, support equipment, publications and technical documentation, personnel training and training equipment, logistics support services, and other related elements of logistics support.
Approved by the US State department, the sale is expected to enhance the ability of the Iraqi forces to maintain themselves in their efforts to bring stability to Iraq and to prevent an overflow of unrest into the neighbouring countries.
In addition to this, the sale directly contributes to foreign policy and national security of the US by helping to improve the security of a strategic partner.
The prime contractors for the FMS programme include Beechcraft Defense Company, Lockheed Martin Mission Systems and Training, CAE USA, Pratt & Whitney, Martin Baker, Hartzell Propeller, Canadian Marconi, L-3COM Wescam, as well as L-3COM Systems West.
