Leidos has secured a $728m contract from the US Army to provide maintenance support for helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft fleets of the Afghanistan Air Force (AAF) and Special Mission Wing (SMW).

Under the Afghanistan Contractor Logistics Support contract, Leidos will also provide all flight operations, logistics and mentoring for the AAF and SMW to operate and maintain aircraft.

Work under the contract will be carried out in Kabul, Afghanistan, with an expected completion date of 31 May 2020.

As part of a separate deal, the AAF will receive six more A-29 Super Tucano aircraft from Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) and its partner Embraer Defense & Security.

The US Air Force (USAF) has placed orders for additional A-29s, as part of A-29 Afghanistan programme.

Production of these additional aircraft will commence immediately in Jacksonville, Florida, and brings the total number of aircraft provided to the programme to 26.

The A-29 is used to conduct advanced flight training, aerial reconnaissance, and other A-29 Afghanistan programme operations.

It features advanced electronic, electro-optic, infrared and laser system technologies, as well as secure radio systems with data links and unrivalled munitions capacity.

To date, the A-29 Super Tucano has been selected by 13 air forces and recorded more than 320,000 flight hours and 40,000 combat hours.
