Lockheed Martin has been awarded a contract by the US Air Force (USAF) to upgrade early-warning long-range surveillance radars as part of the Essential Parts Replacement Program (EPRP) contract.
Under the $46.8m contract, the company will begin modernising 29 AN/FPS-117 radars, which are installed in Alaska, Hawaii and Utah, US, as well as Canada and Puerto Rico.

The contract also includes the replacement of the radar site’s secondary surveillance radar, which is used for air traffic control purposes.
The three-dimensional, solid-state FPS-117 radars provide early-warning surveillance over North America’s airspace and are also capable of operating in remote and hostile environments.
The L-band radar provides seamless surveillance capabilities such as detection and tracking air targets at ranges up to 250 miles.
Work under the contract is expected to be completed by 2014.
