Lockheed Martin has been awarded a $7.2bn contract for the supply of Lot 10 production of F-35 Lightning II fighter aircraft.

Under the terms of the contract, Lockheed will supply 90 F-35 aircraft for the US Air Force (USAF), US Marine Corps (USMC), US Navy,  non-US Department of Defense (DoD) participants, and foreign military sales (FMS) customers and non-US DoD participants.

Of the total aircraft, 76 F-35A are intended for the USAF, while the USMC and navy will receive 12 F-35B and two F-35C aircraft respectively.

The contract is an undefinitised not-to-exceed modification to the previously awarded low-rate initial production Lot 10 F-35 Lightning II advance acquisition contract, the DoD said in a statement.

It also covers diminishing manufacturing and material shortages redesign and management; non-recurring engineering, changes to correct deficiencies resulting from concurrency between systems development and demonstration and production; and unique requirements for non-US participants and FMS customers.

Work under the contract will be carried out in Fort Worth, Texas; El Segundo, California; Warton, UK; Orlando, Florida; Nashua, New Hampshire; Nagoya, Japan; and Baltimore, Maryland US.

It is expected to be completed by the end of March 2020.

Earlier in May, Lockheed won $1.3bn DoD contract for the production of the 11th low-rate initial production (LRIP-11) batch of F-35 Lightning II aircraft.

The F-35 Lightning II is a fifth-generation fighter, combining advanced stealth with fighter speed and agility, fully fused sensor information, network-enabled operations and advanced sustainment.
