Satcom solutions provider Newtec is to provide an airborne satellite modem for use on the Royal Canadian Air Force's (RCAF) Aurora patrol aircraft fleet.
Under the contract with General Dynamics Mission Systems-Canada, Newtec will provide MDM9000 satellite modem as part of Aurora Incremental Modernization Project Block IV upgrades.
The MDM9000 is an ATR-size airborne modem that provides high-data rate (HDR), beyond line-of-sight (BLOS) airborne communication between the airborne platform and the DND ground network.
It is equipped with DVB-S2X and S2 waveforms, Newtec’s end-to-end FlexACM technology for performance and fast link acquisition.
Newtec Government and Defense market director Koen Willems said: “The Newtec MDM9000 modem is a next-generation product that embodies the latest technologies, like DVB-S2X and Newtec’s Bandwidth Cancellation (BWC), and is available for deployment today.
“By choosing both the MDM9000 on the aircraft and on the ground for its operations, Canada’s Department of National Defence will benefit from the highest throughput at maximum service availability, allowing the relay of high-definition video and sensor data from its Aurora fleet to increase operational efficiency and enhance the decision making process.”

RCAF uses CP-140 Aurora long-range patrol aircraft for domestic and international defence missions.
The aircraft is used in a wide variety of operations such as strategic airborne surface (sea and land) and subsurface missions, as well as maritime, overland intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) and search-and-rescue (SAR) missions.
