The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency has notified Congress of a potential foreign military sale (FMS) of CBU-105D/B Wind Corrected Munition Dispenser (WCMD) Sensor Fuzed Weapons (SFW) to the Government of the Republic of Korea.
Under the estimated $325m FMS programme, South Korea has requested the delivery of a total of 367 CBU-105D/B WCMD SFWs, along with 28 captive air training missiles, and seven dummy air training missiles.
The potential sale also includes the supply of 18 spare tails kits for maintenance float, electronic warfare systems, personnel training and training equipment and logistical support services, among others.
The CBU-105D/B SFWs will be employed by South Korea to upgrade its armed forces and also to boost its capability to counter a range of enemy defences, such as armoured vehicles and maritime threats.
Besides contributing to the US Government’s foreign policy goals and national security objectives, the FMS sale is also expected to enable the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) to further expand its interoperability with the US and other regional coalition forces.
According to the department, South Korea will deploy the cluster munitions and technology only against clearly defined military targets, and the employment will not contribute to more than 1% unexploded ordnance across the range of intended operational environments.
