Minuteman III

BAE Systems has received a contract from the US Air Force (USAF) to sustain the readiness of the country’s intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) inventory.

According to the $534m contract, the company will deliver systems engineering, integration, testing, logistics and other services to support the missile, ground and launch systems for 450 deployed LGM-30G Minuteman III missiles for the next eight years.

BAE Systems Support Solutions sector president Erin Moseley said the company aims to prevent failure of the ICBM programme, which serves as a pillar in the US national security.

”Our team has the right experience, expertise and past performance to support the air force and ensure the operational readiness of these vital strategic assets,” Moseley said.

Manufactured by Boeing, the LGM-30G Minuteman III is a ground-based ICBM designed to deliver nuclear warheads, and represents one component of a nuclear triad that is complemented by the Trident submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) and by nuclear weapons carried by long-range strategic bomber aircraft.

Having entered operational service with the USAF in 1968, the missiles are currently located in silos at the 90th Missile Wing at Warren Air Force Base (AFB) in Wyoming, the 341st Missile Wing at Malmstrom AFB in Montana, and the 91st Missile Wing at Minot AFB in North Dakota, US.

Managed by the Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center (NWC), work is scheduled to be primarily carried out at three locations, including Hill AFB in Utah, Vandenberg AFB in California, and near Barksdale AFB in Shreveport, Louisiana, US.

As part of the contract, BAE will be actively recruiting from its existing skilled workforce at each site.

The company has been offering engineering and integration for the US Navy’s Strategic Systems Programs, which support submarine-launched ballistic missiles for more than 50 years.
