Charles River Analytics (CRA) has been awarded two contracts to develop innovative cyber capabilities for use by the US Air Force (USAF).
Awarded by the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center (AFLCMC), the contracts cover development of probabilistic relational models for cyber situation awareness (PRM4Cyber) and an advanced pattern recognition (APR) system.
The company is collaborating with PatchPlus Consulting for the production of technologies that will eventually be validated by AFLCMC for use in a cyber Air Operations Center (AOC).
Under the PRM4Cyber project, the company will specifically address challenges faced by the air force when trying to quickly detect and respond to cyber attacks.
The company will apply probabilistic relational models (PRMs), which is an emerging technology designed to model a situation as a set of objects and the relationships between them, to cyber situation awareness, in an effort to provide an understanding of current cyber activities and the environment.
Commenting on the project, Charles River principal scientist Dr. Avi Pfeffer said: ”PRM4Cyber will help the Air Force assess the applicability of PRM technology for providing effective and rapid cyber situation awareness.”

By GlobalDataAs part of the second contract, the team will modify and apply an APR system to cyber domain in a bid to help the air force validate how effectively multiple APR algorithms can detect computer network attacks.
Each algorithm features different capabilities and strengths, which are integrated into a common framework by the APR system for delivery of comprehensive coverage of a range of attack behaviours that can occur in the cyber domain.
CRA has also developed PRMs for a multitude of projects, including for the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s (DARPA) Probabilistic and Relational Inferences in Dynamic Environments programme in 2011.
