The US Air Force (USAF) has signed a co-operative research and development agreement (CRADA) with Fixmo to provide servicemen with secure mobile communications and access to mission-critical applications from a multitude of smartphones and tablets.
As part of the agreement, the 688th Information Operations Wing (IOW) will focus on production and installation of advanced mobile security and attestation technologies that will allow trusted mobile computing on a broad range of mobile devices.
US Air Force Space Command (AFSPC) chief technology officer Bill Marion said the service understands the mission opportunities that can be delivered from a productivity and efficiency standpoint through secure mobile technology to airmen and executive leaders.
More specifically, the 688th IOW will validate Fixmo Secure Gesture as a potential replacement to existing smart card technology for advanced user authentication on mobile devices without requirement for custom hardware or external readers.
Commenting on the technology, Fixmo US president Bruce Gilley said: ”Not only is it more secure and tougher to crack than traditional alphanumeric passcodes, but it is also easier to use and a fraction of the cost of traditional multi-factor authentication solutions.”
The air force currently uses the Fixmo Sentinel solution for device integrity verification and mobile device management (MDM) as part of its AFSPC-led mobile device initiative.
