The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has contracted Saab to define future options for Sweden’s Gripen C/D fighter jets.
The activity that will be carried out under the order will inform FMV on requirements to maintain the Gripen C/D fighter jet’s effective operational capability and availability until 2035.

Work under the contract will be carried out during the period of December this year to December next year.
The contract is valued at SEK185m ($22.2m).
Saab business area Aeronautics head senior vice-president Jonas Hjelm said: “Gripen C/D is the backbone of the Swedish Air Force and will be for many years to come.
“The result of the work will be that the customer has the ability to take different directions depending on their future needs.

Gripen is also operational with the air forces of many countries such as the Czech Republic, South Africa, Thailand and Hungary.
It is being operated as platform for test pilot training by the UK Empire Test Pilots’ School (ETPS).
Furthermore, Sweden has ordered 60 new Gripen fighter jets and Brazil will acquire 36 aircraft.
Last week, Saab’s Brazilian Aerostructures plant achieved a milestone by producing its first aerostructure for the Gripen E fighter jet.
Recently, Saab secured a contract to upgrade French Air and Space Force’s mobile command and control systems.
