Swedish aerospace and defence company Saab and the UAE have signed a follow-on contract for GlobalEye airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft.

GlobalEye is the Swedish firm’s new multi-role airborne surveillance system. It is designed to provide air, maritime and ground surveillance on a single platform.

In 2015, the UAE signed a contract with Saab for the sale of GlobalEye. The UAE Government has unveiled plans to deploy the systems as the swing-role surveillance system (SRSS).

The follow-on serves as an amendment to the original contract.

The $1.018bn contract is set to last from 2020-25.

Saab noted that the contract work will be carried out in Gothenburg, Linköping, Arboga, Järfälla and Luleå in Sweden. Some of the work will also take place in Centurion, South Africa.

The latest contract was booked under Saab’s Q4-2020 as the contract was signed on 30 December.

Last month, Saab announced that its Brazilian Aerostructures plant achieved a milestone by producing its first aerostructure for the Gripen E fighter jet.
