Turkey is likely to consider acquiring fifth-generation Sukhoi Su-57 fighter jets from Russia if the US decides to suspend the possible sale for the 100 F-35s.
The US might decide to abandon the delivery of the Lightning II multirole fighters as punishment to Turkey for the purchase of S-400 air missile defence systems from Russia, reports Defense World.net.
Last December, Russia and Turkey signed a loan agreement for the delivery of the S-400 air defence weapons to Ankara, Turkey. The deal has reportedly created disagreements between Turkey and the US.
Believing that the missile defence system would be incompatible with Nato defences, the US has threatened to impose sanctions against Ankara.
The collaboration between Russia and Turkey on military software and technology might possibly include the delivery of the Sukhoi aircraft, which is claimed to be the direct competitor of the F-35 jet, reports Yeni Safak.
On 24 May, a US Senate committee passed its version of a $716bn defence policy bill, which included a measure to eliminate Turkey from the US F-35 programme. However, some US congressmen and senators have demanded that Turkey should be allowed to purchase the military equipment from Russia in spite of being a part of Nato.
